ALI LABELLE
This isn’t my favorite book, but it did change my life: How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell. It’s a little dense and sometimes academic—it took me about a year to finish—but I spent a good part of that very year rethinking my relationships to my work, to social media, to the news, and to the people around me. It challenged me to take a step back from it all and to question my own beliefs, both in a grand sense and in myself. “Friends, family, and acquaintances can see a person who lives and grows in space and time,” Odell writes, “but the crowd can only see a figure who is expected to be as monolithic and timeless a brand.” This book reminded me to listen to my own voice.
